The Truth About Processing Childhood Trauma: It’s In Your Hands
Trauma can be the consequence of something happening that shouldn’t have happened; or something not happening that should have… and in either case, us not being resourced to process it at the time.
Those moments become locked within us, frozen in time. Each of us carry around many, many of these moments, many from childhood, constantly replaying outside of our consciousness. And most of us go through life with the implicit belief that liberation of these frozen parts lies in the hands of the person responsible for the experiences. This is natural and understandable. After all, they created the wound – if only they would make it right, acknowledge what happened, or do it differently. But that very rarely happens… So we remain at the mercy of those people and that experience – and its echoes continue playing out in our present lives.
Here’s what shifts everything: the processing and integration of these experiences doesn’t lie in the hands of another, but in our own. There are processes we can use to identify these moments, create connection, and give ourselves exactly what we needed, in a way that no other person possibly could. And in doing so, we defuse the experience. This is sensitive and important work that requires the right conditions and support.
