It's what becomes possible after we've grieved.And grief isn't just about death. The relationship that never became what you needed it to be.People can stay stuck in longing for decades, waiting for something to be different, replaying what should have been.The only way forward is through. To feel the full weight of what was lost or what will never be. To mourn it, not just understand it.Grief is hard work. When conflict happens, we're usually trying to resolve it while it's happening - defending, explaining, convincing.This practice asks you to stop trying to fix it and start trying to understand it.Create intentional space. One person shares their experience (not complaints about the other). The other person just listens... completely present, and trying to understand - not planning their response.Then the listener mirrors back what they heard, as accurately as possible.If something was missed, the speaker fills it in. Then swap.It sounds almost too simple to work. But what it creates is the orientation of collaboration - both people trying to understand rather than both people trying to be understood.That shift changes everything.Try it this week and notice what happens.
